Film Dash: Digital Galore!

Film Dash is Birmingham’s 48-hour film challenge, in association with Hello Digital.


It’s free to enter and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a professional film crew with years of experience or an aspiring film maker with nothing but a webcam. We’re looking to reward creativity and imagination, which means everyone’s in with a chance.

The Challenge:

Friday 17 October – at 6pm at The Theatre (next to the Kitchen) in the Custard Factory the teams will be given a short briefing and the criteria for their films. At 7pm the teams will be set loose (although we’ll be around for a little while later for any stragglers.

The teams will then have 48 hours to script, shoot and edit their films.

Sunday 19 October – films and documentation (see rules) must be handed in to the organiser, Chris Unitt, who will be sat in Cafe Bebo, Paradise Forum (underneath the central library – click for map) until 7pm.

The prizes:

The films will be watched by the judging panel and the winner will be announced and screened at the ‘Michael Balcon: Into The Light‘ event at the Odeon Cinema on New Street as part of Hello Digital. There may also be a prize for the winning team (tbc

The rules:

CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL LIST OF RULES. For now, here are the main points. Full rules will be given to registered teams:

  • Teams may have up to 5 members (exclusive of cast – have as many actors as you like but remember they might slow you down)
  • All filming must be done during the period of the challenge (although stock photos and pre-recorded music may be used, although nothing infringing copyright will be accepted)
  • Under 18’s can take part but must be supervised by someone over 18
  • If filming in public teams must abide by the terms of the filming permit we are providing
  • Location release and talent release forms must be obtained where necessary and handed in with the film
  • Teams must incorporate their given criteria into their film
